Kodachrome Basin State Park, Utah
A 1948 National Geographic expedition thought the multi-hued sandstone here was so vivid it deserved the name of the era's favorite color film, and the basin still earns it. Sixty-seven stone spires called sedimentary pipes, some over 170 feet tall, rise from red-rock canyons that record 180 million years of geologic layers. Twelve miles of trails wind past formations like Chimney Rock and Ballerina Spire, with hiking, biking, horseback riding, and even a 3D archery course to fill the day.
